Editorial Guidelines
Who writes this stuff and why you should trust it.
People make gear decisions based on what we write. Dogs end up on trails wearing harnesses and boots we recommended. That weight matters to us, and it shapes how we approach everything on this site.
Who writes the content
Our contributors are people who actually use this gear in the field. Professional dog trainers who hike with clients. Search and rescue handlers who need equipment that works when stakes are high. Vet techs who understand canine biomechanics. Experienced hikers who've logged thousands of trail miles with their dogs over years and decades. Nobody here writes about gear they haven't personally tested.
How we verify claims
Health claims get checked against veterinary research. When we say something about joint stress or heat regulation or paw pad injuries, we're drawing from peer-reviewed studies and conversations with veterinary professionals who specialize in active dogs. We link to sources when it helps you verify what we're saying.
Technical claims get tested. If a manufacturer says their boot is waterproof, we walk through water until we know whether that's true. If they claim a harness distributes weight evenly, we load it up and watch how dogs move. Specs on packaging are hypotheses. Our testing provides the answers.
What we publish
Product reviews based on hands-on testing, roundups that rank gear using data from our protocols, head-to-head comparisons when products compete for the same use case, and training guides written by people who actually work with dogs on trails and handle emergencies when things go wrong miles from the trailhead.
We don't publish content about products we haven't used. We don't rank gear we haven't tested. If we're writing about it, someone on our team has put miles on it.
Keeping content current
Gear changes. Prices shift. Manufacturers discontinue products or release updated versions. We review our most-read articles quarterly and update them when information goes stale. If a product we recommended gets a redesign that changes our opinion, we say so.
